Starlink: Direct to Cell

SpaceX plans to release Starlink Direct to Cell service, offering cellular connectivity to existing LTE phones via satellite. The service will initially be limited to texting services in 2024. Voice and data will follow in 2025 alongside support for Internet of Things devices.

No additional hardware, firmware or special apps are required.  Only a 4G LTE phone is needed as long as you can see the sky the service will work.

Satellite cellular services have been on the rise with Apple launching its own satellite-based Emergency SOS feature for iPhones. AST Space Mobile is also seeking to deliver cellular satellite service to smartphones next year.

Starlink infrastructure

In addition to Starlink launched in 2021, SpaceX looks to expand its satellite service to cover all devices. This could enable Tesla cars to stay connected no matter where you are and could help pave the way for autonomous vehicles to stay connected, communicate, and receive data.
