Matter 1.0 – Smart Home Standard

The global smart home market is worth $79.17billion in 2022. With many products available to consumers from a variety of manufacturers such as Phillips, Ring, LG, Samsung and Google it can be difficult to set up and manage different smart home devices. Each device has its setup and is only compatible with certain devices making building an interconnected smart home difficult. The Matter 1.0 standard is designed to help ease the purchasing and setup process.

What is Matter 1.0?

The Matter 1.0 standard was created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) which consists of several technology companies. They have published a Matter 1.0 standard that hopes to standardise connectivity between smart home devices making it easier for consumers to adopt smart-connected devices. The Matter 1.0 standard has been driven by the big technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Apple, and Samsung SmartThings coming together to drive Matter forward and collectively unify the fragmented smart home market.

Benefits of Matter 1.0

The main feature of Matter is to simplify consumer lives when adopting new smart home technologies. Interoperability across devices, ecosystems, and brands would make it easier to introduce the new device into a smart home environment. Matter can help reduce the number of apps needed to control devices in a smart home and can improve the consolidation of devices with virtual assistants. Matter-certified devices will enable a group of devices that are manufactured by different companies to communicate with each other will ease without the need for multiple apps. For existing smart devices, manufacturers are looking to move them to the Matter 1.0 standard via updates by allowing communication with the Matter network via a bridge.
