DJI Osmo Mobile 2 - Hyperlapse

For my final university project, I decided to create hyperlapses by taking pictures for every frame and stitching them together. I decided to use the manual method, which involved attaching a DSLR camera to a tripod and moving the camera a couple of inches after every shot. For a 5-second lapse, it would take me 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to capture over 300 photos. This process was so long and manual. When I discovered a mobile gimble that had hyperlapse capabilities I instantly bought the gimble and decided to test the hyperlapse.

Manual Method

Here is my attempt at creating a hyperlapse using the manual method, this is the exact footage I created for my university project.

As you can see though the hyperlapse effect was visible, there was a lot of shaking due to the uneven surface. For my project, I created 5 different videos with different buildings as its point of reference.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Method

Here is the one created using the DJI Osmo Mobile 2.

Using the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 to create the hyperlapse firstly quickened the time to create one as the gimble stabilises the footage, all I have to do is walk slowly and the gimble will do everything. Creating a hyperlapse takes time and experimentation to get right. To create an effective hyperlapse, you must have a focal point at which the camera will focus and the surface you move on has to be flat. Another point to consider is the line of sight is not obstructed during the filming process.

Lessons learnt

Even successfully creating a hyperlapse I have learnt that you won’t instantly get a perfect hyperlapse footage. It will take multiple times to get right and experimentation to see the limitations of the shot you might want to achieve. To create a great hyperlapse you will need some kind of activity happening around the object. Be prepared to commit many hours to create a perfect hyperlapse. The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is a little difficult to master to create a perfect hyperlapse, however if I continue to use it more to create hyperlapses, I will be able to create more great looking hyperlapses without the footage being shaky.
